Dr. Khalid Osman received the 2026 Emerging Scholar Award from the National Sustainability Society at its Third Annual Conference in Denver, CO. The award honors junior researchers whose innovative scholarship addresses pressing sustainability challenges and who partner with communities and organizations beyond academia to translate that work into action. NSS recognized Khalid for community-engaged research that integrates civil engineering, public health, social science, and environmental justice to understand why technical water solutions succeed or fail in marginalized communities. Reviewers highlighted work co-produced with utilities, NGOs, ministries, and residents across Flint, Detroit, Houston, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia, including its influence on utility crisis communication in Flint, household water treatment strategies in East Africa, and national sanitation guidelines. The award reflects the commitment that guides our lab - community trust and lived experience are essential to sustainable water infrastructure.
